Many regard Çatalhöyük as being integral to the understanding of the origins of civilization in Turkey and the Middle East. The ancient site dates from 7400 to 6000 B.C. and possesses some of the world’s earliest mural art. Çatalhöyük is on the Turkish tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage site designation. If successful, the site’s inscription would make it the only Neolithic site on the World Heritage list from the Middle East.
