Crown Prince of Wales Charles' four-day visit to Turkey starts today in Konya.
Prince Charles arrived in Turkey with his wife Camilla, the duchess of Cornwall and is expected to visit historic and cultural sites in Izmir, Ankara, Konya and Istanbul. Prince Charles is known to take special interest in Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, the famous 13th century Turkish poet, and his visit includes trips to places associated with the poet.
Along with his wife he will tour the Museum of Mevlana, where the poet's grave is also located. The Thin Minaret and Karatay Madrassah, dating back to the 13th century reign of Anatolian Seljuks, are other sites on the prince's schedule. Charles will attend a whirling dervish ceremony to be performed by the Turkish Sufistic Musical Ensemble at the Mevlana Culture Center, where he will also deliver a speech. The final site he will visit is Çatalhöyük, a Neolithic settlement whose earliest layers have been traced back to 9000 B.C. and where excavations have been taking place for the last 13 years by an English team of archaeologists headed by Professor Ian Hodder
