Ceramics Conservation Laboratory Completed at the National Museum

GHF, The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, have been working in partnership with the National Museum of Cambodia to advance the care and conservation of the National Museum’s collection. Following upon the development of a metals conservation laboratory and program, the Freer and Sackler are now working with the National Museum to expand its conservation efforts by building a laboratory for ceramics conservation adjacent to the Metal Conservation Laboratory. The laboratory is an addition that mirrors a 1950s addition to the other side of the building, and blends in with the original appearance of this historic structure while at the same time returning the building to a symmetrical layout. The building project is managed by the Administration of the National Museum, with Paul Jett, Head of the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research (DCSR) of the Freer and Sackler Galleries acting as a consultant and advisor. Trained ceramic conservators are available and willing to work in the ceramics laboratory; they are now housed in a modest space at the Royal University of Fine Arts. The new laboratory, with a size of roughly 600 square feet, will provide the conservators with much more space, and the ability to take in students for training in conservation.
