FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENOWNED ASIA HERITAGE CONSERVATOR JOINS GLOBAL HERITAGE FUND AS DIRECTOR OF CONSERVATION FOR ASIA AND PACIFIC AND GHF’S SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD

John Sanday OBE Brings Extensive International Conservation Experience to the GHF Management Team and Senior Advisory Board

PALO ALTO, CALIF. (April 28, 2007) – John Sanday OBE, a renowned historic architect and conservator with over three decades of field experience in Nepal, Cambodia, India, Bhutan and China, joins Global Heritage Fund (GHF) as our Director of Conservation, Asia and Pacific.  GHF is a leading international conservancy dedicated to preserving endangered world heritage sites in developing countries through an integrated Preservation by Design program of planning, scientific conservation, training and community development.

John Sanday joins Global Heritage Fund from the World Monuments Fund where he was Field Director in Cambodia and Preah Khan Project Manager in Angkor for the past fifteen years. John Sanday has also completed a number of historic preservation, training and development projects in Nepal and Bhutan for the American Himalayan Foundation.

John Sanday, FSA, OBE is a British architect who has spent the last 36 years living and working in Nepal and leading field projects in Cambodia, India, Bhutan and China. As one of the leading architectural conservators in Asia, he has traveled and worked all over the sub-continent on a wide assortment of historic buildings: monasteries in the high Himalaya, Palaces in India, and since 1989, in the Monuments of Angkor Cambodia.

John’s most recent commissions are in Mustang, Nepal and Bumthang, Bhutan where John has created programs to train young local professionals and craftsmen to master the skills of conserving and repairing their own cultural heritage. These teams will take on the responsibility to maintain their architectural masterpieces rather than the common practice of reconstructing them in new materials.

“John Sanday is one of the most seasoned field conservators I have ever met, and will help us build an outstanding technical and field-based science foundation for the work of Global Heritage Fund across Asia and the Pacific”, says GHF Executive Director Jeff Morgan. “Not only is he one of the leading experts in Asia for historic architecture, archaeology and world heritage, but has worked in almost all of the developing countries in Asia where GHF is focused and brings strong relationships with the Ministries and top officials. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as incredible donor and partner relations.”

John Sanday was recently awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contribution to architectural conservation. For his long-standing work developing training programs and conserving many significant Asian historic buildings and sites, John has been elected a fellow of the illustrious Society of Antiquaries, London.

Among John Sanday’s many accomplishments over the past three decades include his restoration of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace in Kathmandu and conservation and training at Mustang Monastery in Nepal. At Preah Khan in Cambodia, John Sanday worked over fifteen years to transform a highly endangered monument complex to one of Angkor’s main visitor sites. At Preah Khan, Sanday trained a team of 70 skilled workers in restoration crafts and conservationtechnology working with a group of Cambodian students of architecture and archaeology who assisted with the planning and supervision of work on site.

"The advice and counsel of John Sanday adds significant conservation, planning and technical expertise as GHF pursues its mission of long-term preservation of mankind's most important world heritage cultural sites in developing countries. John has been a teacher and mentor to many of the best of Asia’s next-generation field archaeological and heritage conservators," explained Morgan.
