There is great controversy surrounding the origins of the inhabitants of Easter Island. Archaeological evidence points to the discovery of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui - a Polynesian name dating back to the 1860s - by Polynesians in approximately 500 AD. Easter Island is best known for the Moai, or giant stone monoliths that surround its coastline.
