The Business of Saving
China’s Heritage
May 2010
By Jeff Morgan, Executive Director, Global Heritage Fund
A Members Briefing and Networking Reception
CBBC London, Wednesday 12 May 2010
Executive Director, Mr. Jeff Morgan, will present an overview of Global Heritage Fund’s China Heritage Programme, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pingyao Ancient City and Foguang Temple in Wutai Mountains, Shanxi. Mr. Morgan will explain how GHF navigates the bureaucratic and cultural landscape of China in order to provide management and funding solutions for high-value heritage assets.
Established in 2002, GHF is the only international conservancy dedicated to saving the earth’s most significant and endangered cultural heritage sites in developing countries. GHF’s early stage investment and short project timeframe catalyses local and government-level investment in a site, and by highlighting the site as an economic as well as cultural asset leads to sustainable development and managed growth. GHF’s completed projects include the master conservation planning and restoration of over 200 ancient Naxi residences in Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan, China, the Kars Historic District in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, the My Son Sanctuary in Vietnam, and Izborsk Fortress, Russia.
Mr. Jeff Morgan is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of GHF. He is a trained urban and regional planner and holds an M.S. in Management from Stanford and B.S. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University. He had a long career as a marketing executive in international technology before he co-founded GHF in 2002 with Stanford archeologist Dr. Ian Hodder, who is currently director of the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. He is author of Saving Our Global Heritage (2003) and Cracking the Japanese Market: Keys to Success in the New Global Economy (1991: Free Press).
